Edible Landscaping Success in the Desert Southwest Message

Dear Folks,

Thank you for your interest in the very special email subscription newsletter entitled "Edible Landscaping Success in the Desert". Many folks want a simple way to keep up with what to plant and how to succeed. This newsletter is the answer!

There is a lot of information here folks, but it is all important to you and will be helpful in understanding what the offer is.

EDIBLE LANDSCAPING consists of two parts, the planting/gardening of all the great edibles which can be grown here in the Desert Southwest, and the harvesting and using of the bounty.

PLANTING: This subscription newsletter will help you garden more successfully in the desert southwest by giving you the upcoming planting information with sufficient time to prepare your garden and purchase plants or seeds or any other necessary products.

HARVESTING: Knowing when to pick your garden's bounty can be a bit tricky if you have not grown a particular edible in the desert before. Just as important, I think, is knowing when to look for locally grown and harvested farm-stand fruits, vegetables and herbs at the farmers markets. Outside of your own garden harvest, locally grown and fresh picked are not only more tasty, they are also more nutrient dense -- and you are supporting your local farmers.

MYTH--IF THEY SELL IT-IT MUST BE TIME TO PLANT -- A plant appearing in the local nurseries is not always the proper timing (nurseries like all businesses cater to customer requests, not necessarily what works best or is most successful). I once found a traditional sweet cherry tree in a local nursery and because they are totally incapable of fruiting here in the valley (they may put on flowers but do not get cold enough to set fruit), I went and asked one of the staff. His comment was "we carry it because the customers ask for it." This is a rare occurrence, but needs to be in the 'buyer aware and beware' mental framework.

What's a more common example?

Tomato plants in January -- unless you have a greenhouse or can otherwise frost and cold protect the plants (there are simple ways to do that-BUT), January is NOT the time to set out tomato plants - our typical last frost day in the low desert is mid to late February.

Cilantro plants for sale in February is almost a cruel joke. Same with dill. Both plants will blast into flower and seed within days or at most a couple of weeks after planting at these times of the year because they are both cold weather herbs which need to be seeded in late summer to fall.

Basil plants in the fall - same problem only the reverse - basil loves the heat and needs to be frost protected during the winter to keep it going -- and it tastes and smells terrible when it is cold! (Frost protecting these kind of plants is for the primary purpose of giving you a jump start to growth in the spring, not to be able to eat them during the winter.)

If however, you go to the nursery or online, armed with a list of things to plant in the next 2+ weeks, whether seed or plant, you will have better success and you will send a message to the nurseries about what you the customer are really looking for.

I decided to develop this new Newsletter ("Edible Landscaping Success in the Desert") after many years of writing columns, newsletters and, recently, blogs on when to plant and what's fresh. Consistently the comments I receive back are how helpful they are, and more frequently, "I don't always remember to check your information on when to plant" or variations of that.

The bottom line for many part-time gardeners and would-be gardeners is the over-busy lifestyles we lead. Many folks want a simple way to keep up with what to plant.

"Edible Landscaping Success in the Desert" is an inexpensive reminder 'alert' arriving in your email inbox, giving you time to prepare for what to do next. You will receive these newsletters approximately 2 weeks before a target date, for instance, what to get ready for summer planting in August so you are harvesting in the fall. You will receive the same alert 2 days before the target date as a reminder.

The target date is either a beginning or a continuing date. That means you generally have up to 2 weeks after the target date to get the seeds or plants in the ground for maximum success.

The Mission of "Edible Landscaping Success in the Desert" newsletter is YOUR SUCCESS. I want this to be the gentle reminder that you CAN succeed IF you plant at the appropriate time for the edible.

Not sure if this is for you because you have a small backyard or can only garden in containers or raised beds? Do you have neighbors who enjoy gardening? Then -- think 'community garden' where you and your friends/neighbors divide up the edible selections, and come together several times a year to share the bountiful harvest.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

Receiving this newsletter requires a prepayment.

After that it is a matter of how you wish to join.

The newsletter is managed through a Yahoo-Groups page site. Generally, yahoo-group membership requires the recipient to have a yahoo screen name. Mine is ask_the_herb_lady@yahoo.com

However, because not everyone wants more than one screen name, or they may not be comfortable with the internet other than receiving and sending emails. Such persons may find managing something complicated off-putting.

Therefore, you have two choices to receive this newsletter. Both options send the alerts to your designated screen name once I have verified your payment receipt.

1) You may sign up using any screen name other than a yahoo account. You will be able to email me back with questions and you will be able to look at your screen name mail, old mail and saved mail for the alerts (in whatever manner your email account program saves email).

2) If you have a yahoo screen name account or wish to sign up for one (they are free to register) then you will receive the alerts as above, PLUS you will be able to access the GROUP HOME PAGE, which also allows you to check out the calendar for upcoming alerts and also look back at old alerts. Looking backwards and forwards on the calendar is the primary benefit of having a yahoo screen name for this service.

If you are accustomed to participating in yahoo groups, you may be familiar with the group- question-post feature which allows a member to ask a question of the group members. It is not my intention to establish a two-tier subscription, so group post questions may be restricted to general clarifications of any information I provide in the alerts. Should something of this nature arise and I consider it important I would send an updated alert to everyone.

Any subscriber, whether selecting subscription option 1 or 2 will be able to email me, privately, with their questions or concerns. A special email address to reach me regarding the newsletter is provided. This is not meant to be confusing to you, but to alert me that a message is specific to the newsletter content.

Again, I will send update alerts as needed to clarify anything important.

THE FEE:

I am offering a reduced introduction rate of $15/Year (works out to just $1.25 per month) for anyone who signs up before 5 p.m. Arizona time, September 30, 2009. The annual renewal rate if you sign up before September 30, 2009 will stay at $15, as a thank you (I don't like those subscription services which penalize continued customers with a higher renewal rate).

The fee is paid in advance via paypal either with your PP account or your credit/debit card.

No refunds will be made, due to the complexity of setting up this program and the small amount of the fee.

After September 30, 2009, the subscription rate will be $21/year. The fee averages out to $1.75 per month.

It is the responsibility of the Subscriber to notify me if they change their receiving screen name for any reason.

Because this is a subscription, you will receive a notice near the end of your subscription year to re-subscribe. You may certainly choose not to continue your subscription.

Why should you consider re-subscribing at the end of the year? Although much of the information will remain static, and you can certainly retain alerts in your computer indefinitely, it is my intention to keep the alerts populated with up-to-date information, new tips, new-to-me edibles to try out which I have experimented with, special situation planting needs, and fresh recipes each year.

Got more questions?

Send an email to ask_the_herb_lady@yahoo.com
